Recommendation

This item was brought forward by Ald. Cummings.  This issue is centered around the intersection of E. Sunset Drive and Milky Way.  This intersection is only 150 feet east of E. Sunset Drive & STH 164 signalized intersection.  Drivers going northbound on Milky Way can access E. Sunset Drive via. a median opening.  Westbound drivers on E. Sunset Drive, queue when stopped at STH 164 and partially block the opening for Milky Way.  In order to keep this area unblocked, the request is to have a stop bar marking installed and install cross hatched pavement markings on E. Sunset Drive to demarkate an area where queued drivers cannot block the intersection.  Also to enhance the existing “DO NOT BLOCK INTERSECTION” sign so drivers see it.

Department of Public Works has upgraded some signing related to “DO NOT BLOCK INTERSECTION”.  However, the department is not in favor of placing additional pavment marking to “hatch” out the intersection area.  During peak hour traffic, it is difficult for westbound drivers on E. Sunset to see and understand the hatches and the westbound approach to STH 164 needs as much storage for queued vehicles as possible.  The Department would rather see northbound Milky Way drivers make a right turn and do a U-Turn on E. Sunset about 100 feet east at the left turn for the private roadway. Therefore, the Department of Public Works does not support any more markings.
