Recommendation

This item was brought forward by the Department of Public Work with endorsement from Ald. Rodriquez. The existing posted speed on Arcadian Avenue is 25 MPH west of Eugene Ct. and transitions to 40 MPH from Eugene Ct. to Les Paul Parkway. The city reconstructed Arcadian Avenue in 2017 and installed some turn lanes and center lane markings from Blackstone to Eugene. Engineering staff has been working with PD to encourage vehicular speeds to be lower, especially eastbound coming down the hill from Harding Avenue. For the eastbound direction, drivers see the 40 MPH speed limit sign at Blackstone Ave already and start to accelerate and already going 40+ MPH at the Frist Student bus lot. The recommendation is to reduce the posted speed limit from 40 MPH to 30 MPH from Eugene Ct. to Les Paul. Our expectation is that, over time, vehicles will travel at a safer, lower speed in this corridor.  Engineering staff will work with the police department for enforcement when the new 30 MPH zone is approved and the signs have been changed out.  The Department of Public Works recommends approval.
