Title: Please approve a sign that reads “No Turns While Train is Crossing, All Vehicles Must Stop” for Progress Avenue at the northern most approach to S. West Avenue.
Sponsors: Public Works

Recommendation

This item was brought forward by Public Works in response to a resident who wanted the intersection of S. West Avenue and Progress Avenue to be “painted out” so southbound S. West Avenue drivers don’t block the intersection when they are stopped and waiting for the train to cross.  Upon Engineering review, it was concluded that any vehicle on Progress Avenue wanting to make a left turn to S. West Avenue, cannot be allowed to do so when the train is crossing.  Due to the sharp skew angle of the track to the road, making a left turn when the train is crossing would be very dangerous to drivers.  Public Works would like to reinforce a “No Turn” when trains are crossing, would be a way to ensure that a driver doesn’t attempt a maneuver to turn left to S. West Avenue during a train crossing.  Incidentally, a driver on Progress Avenue turning right onto S. West Avenue is stopped by a signal arm when the train is crossing.  The cost for this signing will be around $100.
